If you’ve followed President Joe Biden’s political career at all, chances are you know a thing or two about his family. It’s a story Biden has emotionally recounted countless times over the years, especially during the 2020 presidential campaign, as he was trying to make a case to the country that he was the right candidate to carry the nation through a time of great grief. As Biden has shared, in 1972, his daughter, Naomi, and his first wife, Neilia, died in a car accident, leaving his sons, Beau and Hunter, injured. Biden went on to marry Jill Jacobs (now known as Dr. Jill Biden), with whom he shares a daughter, Ashley. Beau, the oldest of the children and the former attorney general of Delaware, then passed away in late May 2015 from brain cancer.
For Biden, family is everything, and over the years, that’s grown to also mean his grandchildren: Naomi, Maisy, Finnegan, Natalie, Hunter, Beau (named after the late Beau), and Navy Joan. Some have shown up in news stories, like the Vogue profile of Dr. Biden from March 2020; some have shown up at campaign rallies or at the Democratic National Convention. But for the most part, you can find them on Naomi’s Instagram account. The oldest of the grandchildren has posted several heartwarming cousin moments over the years, proving that this group, who’ve spent their lives in the public spotlight, is tight.
In an interview for the Today Show in January 2021, Naomi, Maisy, and Natalie discussed their close relationship with their grandfather, or their Pop, as they call him. The three talked about what it was like having their Pop back in the White House, saying that even as the president, he still makes time to call each of them. Maisy added that Biden has attended a number of her high school sports games, saying: “It’s really nice knowing he will always be there when I want him to be there, and he will drop anything.”
Then this July, after Biden announced he’d be ending his reelection campaign, Naomi issued a statement of support, writing on X, formerly known as Twitter: “I’m nothing but proud today of my Pop, our President, Joe Biden, who has served our country with every bit of his soul and with unmatched distinction. Not only has he been—and will continue to be—the most effective president of our lifetime, but he has likely already cemented himself as the most effective and impactful public servant in our nation’s history. He has been at the center of, and had a material impact on, literally every single major issue that our country and world has faced for 50 years. Our world is better today in so many ways thanks to him. To the Americans who have always had his back, keep the faith. He will always have ours.”

Naomi is the oldest Biden grandchild and was born in December 1993. She is the daughter of the president’s son Hunter and his first wife, Kathleen. She is named after Hunter and Beau’s sister, Naomi Christina, who was killed in a car crash with her mother, Neilia. She’s the rare Biden grandchild who has a public Instagram account, where she posts cute family snaps like this one with her baby half-brother, Beau. She got her undergraduate degree from the University of Pennsylvania and graduated in 2016 in the same class as Tiffany Trump. Naomi then graduated from Columbia Law School during a virtual ceremony, where her grandfather was a guest speaker.

In September 2021, she announced her engagement to Peter Neal, a student at University of Pennsylvania Carey Law School. (The two previously made a website that helped Americans learn how to gain access to their stimulus money during the COVID-19 pandemic.) The couple had a historic wedding on the South Lawn of the White House in November 2022. For the service, she wore a Ralph Lauren gown; for her reception, she wore custom Reem Acra; and for her after-party, she wore custom Markarian, a family favorite. Because they wanted the wedding to be a private event, press was not permitted inside. Peter and Naomi honeymooned in the Seychelles, which Peter posted about on his Instagram.

Naomi can also often be found providing colorful commentary on X. “Tweets permanently pending approval,” her bio reads, jokingly addressing the spotlight on her social media; the background of her X profile is a picture of her and several of the other Biden grandchildren. As a member of a high-profile political family, her tweets do offer insight into the Bidens’ daily lives. In February 2021, she shared a photo of Biden in some President’s Day “swag” in commemoration of him “literally” being the president. There was a second picture of the back of his hat, embroidered with the name Pop, with the caption: “And just to make sure the job title doesn’t get to his head…” In January 2021, prior to inauguration, she tweeted a picture of Biden lying in his dog Major’s bed with the caption: “Ready for #Indoguration.”

When it was announced that Joe Biden won the 2020 presidential election, Naomi captured an intimate hug with her family; “11.07.20,” she captioned the snap.

Finnegan is the second daughter of Hunter and his first wife, Kathleen. She was born in 2000 and named after the president ’s mother, Jean Finnegan. Finnegan also attended the University of Pennsylvania, and in an interview with TODAY in January 2021, she shared why the family felt so passionately that the former vice president should run in 2020. “I think we shared that urgency that the rest of the country was feeling that he needed to get into the race, because he was the only person that could beat Donald Trump,” she said. “And I think we knew that, and we knew that we could sacrifice a little for the greater good of the country.”

Maisy is Naomi and Finnegan’s youngest sister. She was born in 2001, and she’s the same age as Sasha Obama. The president told The Hill in 2019 that his family and the Obamas had a joint graduation party for Maisy and Sasha when they graduated from Sidwell Friends School in Washington, D.C. “Her best friend is Sasha Obama,” the president told a crowd in Iowa then. “Barack and Jill and the whole family, we had a whole get-together.”

He also made sure to be there for Maisy’s graduation from the University of Pennsylvania in May 2023. Sitting in the audience, he listened to Idina Menzel give a graduation speech (and, of course, sing a bit).
Maisy also maintains an active presence on TikTok, regularly sharing content with her 152K followers. In August 2023, she posted a video of her, Finnegan, Naomi, and Beau lip-syncing to a popular audio about sibling drama. She also has a public instagram account where she displays her art.

Natalie, 19, is the oldest child of the late Beau and his wife, Hallie. She just finished her first year at Penn, following the family tradition. During an interview with TODAY in January 2021, Natalie shared one of the family’s old Thanksgiving traditions, where she and the rest of the Biden gang would do a polar bear plunge, jumping into the ocean in Nantucket in November. “There would always be three people at the beach, because it was a public thing, that would just have a bunch of Joe Biden hats,” she said, laughing.

Beau’s second child goes by Hunter and was born in 2006. He’s named after his uncle and seems quite content to be surrounded by the many women in his cousin lineup. While he previously posted a few videos on TikTok, they have all since been deleted. However, his 1.7 million followers remain, hoping he will reactivate his online presence.
In an interview with Jimmy Kimmel in March 2020, the president even told the late-night host that during quarantine, he socially distanced with Natalie and Hunter, Beau’s children, who live near him in Delaware. “They walk over through the woods and through a neighborhood, and they sit out in the backyard in two chairs, and I sit up in the porch, and we have our conversations, because I’m not allowed to go hug them,” he said at the time. “I miss it.”

The president’s son Hunter previously dated his brother’s widow, Hallie Biden, following Beau’s death, but reports of their split surfaced in May 2019. He then tied the knot with Melissa Cohen that same month, six days after they met. They welcomed a baby in March 2020, naming him Beau after Hunter’s late brother. Adorable pictures and videos of him are posted across his siblings’ social media, including with his older sister and brother-in-law.

Hunter also welcomed a child in 2018 with Lunden Roberts. Although he initially denied being the father, a paternity case found that he is the “biological and legal father” of Navy Joan Roberts . In 2023, Biden publicly acknowledged his grandchild’s presence for the first time. In an exclusive statement to People in July 2023, Biden said, “Jill and I only want what is best for all of our grandchildren, including Navy.”
